Twain was and is badass. Even when he's trivial he's great. I don't have any specific recommendations because i think it's all pretty wonderful in one way or another. (though if you want the directly philosophical, you could start with Letters From Earth (http://www.online-literature.com/twain/letters-from-the-earth/)
